Individual responsibility and student success

In Sunday’s New York Times, an op-ed  article written by Thomas Friedman, author of the best-selling book, “The World is Flat”, caught my attention.  His article speaks to the necessity of individual responsibility for learning and parental expectations related to their children’s education, issues that we as educators understand well and struggle with every day. Research has convincingly shown that students who assume responsibility for their own learning are more motivated and efficient learners. In the discussion about education reform and the focus on teachers and administrators for what’s wrong in public education, there is little mention of the important of parental involvement and personal responsibility as critical components of a student’s success or failure in school. So, just think about how the public discourse surrounding education might change if President Obama would incorporate Mr. Friedman’s suggestion into his State of the Union address tomorrow.

    In higher education, we are discussing this, too, and one phrase I am hearing a lot is “creating self-regulated learners.” There is a book by Linda B. Nilson with that same title.
