Mu Iota Chapter Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Alina Slapac is chapter counselor at Mu Iota/University of Missouri-St. Louis. Mu Iota Chapter has received two awards for its Martin Luther King, Jr. children’s program: The Best Cultural awareness Award (Office of Student Life, UMSL, 2012) and the Silver Literacy Alive! Award (Kappa Delta PI, 2014).

2014-01-20 10.27.36The University of Missouri-St. Louis annually celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with its children’s program.

Last year the chapter designed and implemented the program for more than 150 children from local communities. The program was available for children ages 4-12, while parents attended a program for the adults, and included a series of stations focused on Martin Luther King, Jr., African-American history, African-American culture, unity of cultures, and peace.

2014-01-20 11.46.20The children read books and discussed each theme with Kappa Delta Pi members and volunteers working at each station. Afterwards, the children demonstrated their understanding through multiple activities, which included reading comprehension regarding the books read on MLK, making “peace” crowns and unity bookmarks, coloring sheets with Martin Luther King Jr. and other important historical figures, and making puzzles and buttons to wear.

We are looking forward to another exciting children’s program event this year on January 19!
