    What is racial equity? It is the state in which an individual’s race does not statistically predict how that individual will fare. This can manifest itself through policy changes, practices, attitudes and cultural messages (W.K. Kellogg Foundation, 2018). As of 2014, graduation rates for African American (73%), Latino (76%), and American Indian (70%) high school students still underperformed their White (87%) and Asian (89%) counterparts significantly (Education Week, 2016) which further provides the basis of the claim that racial equity has not yet been achieved. While there has been improvement year over year, more can be done to reach racial equity by giving preservice and inservice teachers improved development opporturnities and preaching the adoption of tolerance.
    Better teacher development is a key component to achieving racial equity in education. A startling statistic is that by 2040 less than half of the school-aged children will be white not of Hispanic descent. Having preservice teachers identify their own culture takes an inside-out approach to help them identify the diverse cultural society around them (Zygmunt-Fillwalk & Clark, 2007). Another key component to achieving racial equity in education is adoption of tolerance. Opening the dialogue about diversity and tolerance between teachers and parents will help in continuing the conversation and creating a uniform message (Pattnaik, 2003).
